Here's set even a beginning knitter can complete. Scarf is 56" long, 6" wide. Hat includes Small (21") and Large (23"). Pattern uses Kraemer Yarns Perfection Chunky (30% Merino wool / 70% acrylic 3.5 oz., 120 yds.Hat or scarf requires 1 skein each of 3 different colors. Use U.S. 10.5 needles or 32" circular. You will also need a large eye darning needle.
